Product Description

Soft knit mattress fabric is produced on circular knitting machines using either single jersey or interlock construction methods. Unlike woven fabrics that use perpendicular warp and weft interlacing, knit structures are formed by interlocking loops of yarn in a continuous spiral or reciprocating motion. This loop-based architecture imparts inherent elasticity in both length and width directions, with elongation capacity ranging from 30% to 80% depending on yarn type and stitch density. The fabric conforms to mattress contours without requiring separate elastic trim or gathering tapes. Typical yarn inputs include combed cotton, polyester-cotton blends, modal, or TENCEL Lyocell, with stitch densities from 18 to 28 needles per inch. The resulting surface has a textured hand feel and drapes over foam or fiber cores with minimal tension-induced distortion.

Processing Considerations

Edge curling during cutting
Single jersey knit has inherent curl at cut edges. Solution: Apply fusible knit tape (10-15 mm width) or use interlock construction which has balanced face/back loop structure.
Stitch distortion after washing
Pre-treatment with open-width relaxing conveyor (120°C, 8 m/min) stabilizes loop geometry; shrinkage reduced from 8% to ≤3%.
Snagging during mattress assembly
Compact yarns with twist multiplier ≥ 4.2 produce denser surface loops less prone to mechanical snagging.

Maintenance Specifications

Washing 40°C machine wash, gentle cycle. Load capacity ≤ 75% of drum volume to prevent loop distortion.
Detergent Liquid neutral detergents (pH 5.5-7.0). Avoid fabric softeners which deposit films between loops.
Drying Low heat (≤60°C) tumble dry or flat dry. Hanging causes lengthwise stretching.
Storage Flat roll storage on core tubes. Avoid folding or stacking under weight which creates permanent crease marks.
