Phase Change Material (PCM) integrated textile for dynamic thermal management in bedding systems

Temperature regulating fabric incorporates Phase Change Materials (PCM) that actively absorb, store, and release heat to maintain a stable microclimate between the sleeper and the mattress surface. The PCM microcapsules (5–20 micron diameter) are embedded within the fiber matrix or applied via pad-dry-cure finishing. When the ambient temperature rises, the PCM absorbs thermal energy and transitions from solid to liquid phase—storing excess heat. Conversely, when temperature drops, the material releases stored heat as it re-solidifies. This dynamic buffering effect reduces skin temperature fluctuations by 3-5°C compared to standard textiles. PCM content can be customized from 20% to 60% of fabric weight, with melting points available from 18°C to 32°C. Fabric constructions include circular knit, warp knit, and woven substrates with weights ranging 180-450 gsm. All products are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 compliant and suitable for direct skin contact applications.

How does the temperature regulating effect work?

Phase Change Materials (PCM) within the fabric absorb thermal energy when the surrounding temperature exceeds the PCM's melting point—storing heat and cooling the surface. When temperature drops below the melting point, the PCM releases stored heat, warming the surface. This creates a buffering effect that maintains skin temperature within a comfortable range.

Can I choose the PCM melting temperature?

Yes. Melting point is customizable from 18°C to 32°C in 2°C increments. For mattress applications, 24-28°C is typically recommended as this aligns with the average skin contact temperature. For pillow covers, 26-30°C is more common. Specific melting points can be specified during sample development.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom PCM content?

MOQ ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 linear meters depending on PCM content and type. Standard PCM formulations (30-40% content) start at 1,000 meters. Higher PCM content (50-60%) or bio-based PCM variants require 2,000-3,000 meters. Sample rolls (10-30 meters) are available for testing.

Does the PCM degrade over time or with washing?

PCM microcapsules are engineered with a durable polymer shell that withstands mechanical stress and washing. Performance retention after 50 industrial wash cycles is ≥90%. After 100 cycles, retention remains above 80%. To maximize longevity, wash at ≤40°C with neutral detergent and avoid harsh chemicals.

Can I combine temperature regulation with other finishes?

Yes. PCM fabrics can be combined with anti-microbial, anti-static, flame retardant, or moisture-wicking finishes. However, additional finishes must be compatible with the PCM microcapsule coating process. Compatibility testing is recommended during sample development to verify performance.
